brief historical overview of shirling & neueweise
Since 1999, Canadian composer jef chippewa has been a copyist for numerous international composers and ensembles (mathias spahlinger, Bernhard Lang, Pïerre Béland, ensemble recherche) and publishing houses (PEERMusic Classical). His work is highly regarded internationally for its æsthetic qualities as much as for its precision and his attentiveness to detail.
- Bernhard Lang, composer (Austria) : “a master’s work.”
- James Saunders, composer (UK) : “...the most convincing work I've seen in the relation it bears to the original.”
- Heinz Stolba, Editor, Universal Edition (Vienna) : “...thoroughly remarkable work.”
The idea for the publishing house fermented during the following years, and in 2004 chippewa began to more concretely formulate his research and reflections on the nature of a publishing house that could be pertinent to the situation of present-day New Music. Composer-colleagues Alberto C. Bernal (Spain) and João Miguel Pais (Portugal) were a constant source of support and were invaluable to the development of various ideas related to the project. Over the next year, both of them joined SN as Assistants: Bernal is now Research Director and Pais Production Director. Together they are founding a publishing house which implements modern solutions to address a number of issues related to New Music
